Getting Around Panama City

Getting around Panama City, Panama can certainly be pretty tricky, especially if it´s your first time here.  The way of giving and receiving directions can be a bit hectic at the best times if you haven´t already gotten used to the system.  For the most part, Panamanians and Ex-Pats alike do not use street names (unless the street name happens to be one of the 4-5 major streets in the city).  It is more common to hear: ¨You know where the McDonald´s is on Via España right near the Rey?  Go right just before that and the hotel is just before the light on the left.¨

It can be a little funny to the ear at first, but it actually makes a decent amount of sense!  In a city where street names are harder to read than people´s license plate numbers and each street has up to 3, THREE legal names, this system of ¨landmark¨ referencing can actually be quite handy.

The moral of this short story is, walk everywhere and/or observe as you go.  Notice where the big stores are, gas stations and points of interest.  Practice with yourself as you travel around.  Most importantly, to get to Lima Limon from Avenida Balboa go up Calle Uruguay past the Meridien Hotel, make a left on the first street (Market is on the corner) and head all the way down almost to the end of the street.  On the right just before a long concrete wall you will see twin terraces.  Lima Limon is white with a wood terrace and green umbrellas.  Welcome!  Please call 390 - 1609 for any questions or email info@limaylimon.com.

Happy trails!
